VOLUNTEER FIRE STATION RADEBEUL-OST
The new fire station serves as the headquarters of the Radebeul-Ost Volunteer Fire Department. Beyond its operational function, the building provides a place for community and social cohesion. As a visible component of the urban landscape, it reinforces the fire department’s presence and creates a gathering place that fosters a sense of identity among its members.
The L-shaped structure is situated between farmland and the nearby railroad tracks. The characteristic multi-gabled roof gives the building a distinctive presence along the street. Canopies define the entrance area and the exits along the apparatus bay, creating sheltered spaces.
The one- and two-story building, made of precast reinforced concrete elements and a lightweight steel roof, organizes its program to ensure efficient operational workflows and short response times. The facade, made of industrial profiled glass, forms a shimmering yet robust shell. Along with the roof shape, it references the surrounding greenhouse architecture in Radebeul.
The new building addresses contemporary questions: How can a purley functional building generate urban quality? How can infrastructure projects foster a sense of identity? How can architecture respond sensitively to the transition between city and countryside?
