Hotel Maritim
The artistic challenge of constructing the „Hotel Maritim“ was the careful integration of the enormous mass of the building into its surrounding. The design was a winning entry of a competition held in the year 2000.
The site with its size of 12.000 square metres is positioned in the „Shellhaus-Quartier“, next to the renown landmark building „Shellhaus“ by Emil Fahrenkamp, almost a neighbour of the „Neue Nationalgalerie“ by Mies van der Rohe and the Potsdamer Platz.
On total building area of 65.000 sqm, there are 505 rooms and suites, individually separable conference spaces with a total area of 5.365 sqm (capacities 5500 persons), a wellness area with a swimming pool, a restaurant, a bar and a bistro combined with a terrace.
The design of the “Hotel Maritim” follows the building height and building line of the Shellhaus. The tower next to the main entrance communicates between old and new forms.
Above the conference spaces the roofs form carefully landscaped courtyards.
The design of the facades covered in the natural stone of travertine is a sensitive reaction to the facade of the Shellhaus.
The design concept follows two principles:
First the „groove-principle“, meaning a layer of even stones crossed with deeper horizontal grooves. This design covers the tower and the first three storeys, which constitute the base. Here all corners are curved.
A contrast forms the „tongue-principle“, meaning a layer of even stones presided over by horizontal cornice stripes which form tongues. This design is applied on the setbacks of the facades. Here all corners are orthogonal.
All windows, outside doors and air grilles on the facade are built in slender frame profiles with an unifying anthracite surface finishing.
