New Buildings for Fløng Kirke
Second Prize in the Design Competition New Parish House for the Church in Flöng, Denmark
Situation
The placing of the new Søgnehus aims to provide a clear direct surrounding to the church, and to have a location for the Søgnehus in a place where it can function in close relation to the church without interfering with it.
The buildings and their surroundings
The new Søgnehus is a simple building, yet with intricate composition. Its appearance is at once striking and understated. In this way the building forms a quiet counterpoint to the church itself, and provides dignified surroundings for the parish activities.
The resulting complex has a disposition that will ensure a renewed connection between the existing church and the Fløng village road. The buildings will be planned so as to minimise damage to existing big trees.
The new buildings of the Søgnehus and the grave facilities are clad with white bricks, which will be washed during construction to give the walls a surface finish inbetween exposed bricks and plaster. This use of the colour white relates the new buildings to the old church and visually gathers the ensemble of parish buildings on the site.
The new Søgnehus
The building of the new Søgnehus is composed of four interlocking volumes, forming an internal courtyard. The internal layout revolves around the courtyard, which brings light into the interior and provides a place for social interaction.
All rooms are entered directly from ground level and are fully accessible. The height of the rooms differ in relation to their use and character. In the interior panels of different types of wood are used to give variation and refinement to the simple and robust interior.
The exterior white bricks relate the new Søgnehus to the existing church and cemetary wall.
