SON DAMETO D’ALT PUBLIC EARLY YEARS EDUCATION CENTRE
We aim for a clear organisational structure. Each function is integrated in such a way as to make the best use of natural light. The strip-like layout allows for direct and flexible relationships between two or more types of space. This approach resolves the interior layout, the exterior and the planning of the rest of the site. A plan is also proposed for future expansion that is consistent with the proposed structure. The roof provides various levels of protection or filtering of direct light.
Inside, the arrangement of panels and curtains allows the relationships between the various functions to be easily adjusted according to the needs of the moment. The multipurpose hall can be opened up to the adjoining spaces to create an open-plan area of 160 m². The materials used — wood, transparent and translucent glass, louvres, rows of shrubs, etc. — meet the requirements for protection, lighting or transparency in each area.
The bewildering conditions imposed by design competitions, procurement procedures and the construction process have made it possible, after a surprisingly long journey, to come full circle on a proposal that was shelved in 2008 and has been revived almost 20 years later. The irony lies in the fact that a shelved project ends up being the appropriate solution to the contingencies to which the public administration subjects the architect, who in this case happens to be addicted to paradoxes.
