RENOVATION AND EXTENSION OF THE SANTA OLIVA LIBRARY
The Santa Oliva Library is part of the Casa de la Cultura of Olesa de Montserrat, located in the Municipal Park. The site has evolved from agricultural land into a public park with civic facilities. Today, the Casa de la Cultura must play a climatic, cultural, environmental and social role. The library extension responds through the following strategies:
- We add a garden, not a building.
An ecological roof restores the relationship with nature and historical memory, integrating vegetation and water into the activities of the library.
- A single-level extension.
A 1,007 m² green roof replaces a parking area, creating new public space for reading and activities.
- The general area becomes a landscape.
A single-level space beneath the ecological roof creates an interior landscape inspired by the former tree plantation of the historic Gori Hotel.
- Improved basement comfort.
Two new patios bring natural light and ventilation to the basement, improving comfort and cooling during summer.
- Maximum connectivity: from buildings to a community.
The extension acts as a connecting building, linking the Casa de la Cultura, the multipurpose hall, the Music School and the existing library — now transformed into a children’s area — while optimising circulation between all spaces.
- A renewable energy-producing building.
The building generates 90 kWp, covering 29% of the annual energy demand of the local Energy Community.
- Urban integration. The extension completes the passage to the park, respects the existing scale, integrates the wisteria pergola and opens views towards Montserrat.
