Riverside Transitional Housing
On a block-wide site at the edge of downtown Riverside, a collection of 1920s bungalows has been transformed into a transitional housing complex around a shared community garden. An anchor community and administration building, together with ancillary gym and laundry structures, completes the campus and provides services to tenants and the LGBTQ+ community.
New porches attached to the rear of each house provide shaded gathering spaces and a transition zone between the private homes and public garden. Each porch is configured to mediate between the homes and the larger context in different ways: some project into the landscape, others wrap around corners, while one detaches entirely from the house and hovers between two, bridging the gap and closing the loop.
The gym and laundry facility at the centre of the campus acts as a community gathering and mixing hub. TruEvolution and its service providers offer medical and mental health services, job and life-skills training, and a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment for formerly homeless tenants to reintegrate into society.
