In Kita-Kamakura is the architect’s own house, built on a hillside in Kamakura, Japan. Rather than allowing a single idea to organize the entire house, the project brings together seven familiar architectural forms: a pyramidal roof, portal frame, stepped floor, nested volumes, three-aisle plan, double-loaded corridor, and split form. Each becomes dominant only within a limited part of the house, so what appears to organize the whole shifts as one moves through it. The plan follows the conventional 910 mm module, while vertical dimensions are coordinated by a private 43 mm module. The house is thus organized by a succession of different wholes rather than by a single governing order.
