Ex Macello di Treviso
The project transforms the former slaughterhouse of Treviso into a new day centre for people in vulnerable situations, with a capacity of approximately 100 users.
Built in the post-war period and used as a slaughterhouse in the 1950s, the building was later converted into an archive for the Treviso Courthouse, until 2026, when a new intervention gives the structure a third life, adapting it to a social and public function.
The project rests on three main actions.
The first is the conservation of the original building. Existing structural elements are retained wherever possible, including the reinforced-concrete trusses, strengthened and left exposed as a defining feature of the interior. The intervention preserves the spatial character of the former industrial building while meeting contemporary safety and functional requirements.
The second improves the building’s energy performance through insulation of the existing envelope and the integration of renewable energy systems, reducing consumption while keeping the original structure legible.
The third reorganises the interior with two compact service volumes inserted into the existing hall, rather than subdividing it. The central space remains open as a large multipurpose area, while the volumes house the main supporting functions without disrupting the building’s original scale and structural rhythm.
The architectural language is deliberately minimal and industrial: exposed concrete, simple surfaces and clearly expressed technical elements form a restrained palette in which old and new remain distinct yet complementary.
The project does not erase the building’s previous identities but builds on them — preserving its structure, upgrading its performance and introducing a limited number of new elements to adapt it to collective use while retaining the traces of its successive transformations.
