Flugt Museum
The starting point for the approximately 2,123 m² complex is a pair of preserved, elongated hospital buildings from the former Oksbøl refugee camp, whose structure, proportions and materials shaped the design logic of the extension. BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group has designed a 1,600 m² museum from this existing structure. A new connecting structure, covering approximately 540 m², is inserted as a standalone building between the two existing structures, thereby forming a sheltered inner courtyard and linking the old and new buildings via a gently curved spatial joint.
In terms of materials, the new building references the red brick of the historic buildings through its Corten steel cladding. Only on the courtyard side does a floor-to-ceiling, curved glass façade open up, allowing daylight and visual connections into the interior spaces. The foyer opens onto a spacious room with a light-coloured timber structural framework. The cantilevered form marks the entrance from the street side and opens up at the rear towards the park and woodland.
Tinker Imagineers from the Netherlands have designed the exhibitions to be interactive.
