PIAZZA ALDO MORO
The work involved the redevelopment of the courtyard-square connecting the municipal villa complex to the town. This is a waste space, the remains of a large rustic courtyard that in recent decades has served as a public space, in continuity with the park and the municipal villa.
The project addresses two main themes: the redesign of the square and the conservative restoration of the portico leading to the Oratory of Saints Charles and Teresa.
The design for the square stems from the need to redefine the relationship between the open parking space and the buildings overlooking it, such as the villa and the portico, historic buildings of great value and monumentality that enhance the courtyard space.
New mineral elements are introduced, such as the new entrance system to the town hall with the construction of a ramp-staircase that frees the base of the villa's side façade, resolving the difference in level according to a simple design consistent with the monumental nature of the building.
Other natural features increase the presence of greenery with new tree-lined areas. In this sense, the square transcends the role of a parking lot, becoming a place where people can stay, transcending the mere passage or parking space.
The project complements the space's distinctive heterogeneity with a new, washed and polished concrete paving featuring a regular pattern. This orthogonal grid is inspired by the system of agricultural parcels that has historically shaped the surrounding landscape. In addition to the new paving, the project also restored the porticoes overlooking the square.
The portico leading to the Church of Saints Charles and Teresa required restoration of its materials and structures. The restoration of the porticoes, which was primarily conservative, has restored these spaces to the public, making them usable and safe.
