Stalla d’Zura
An old barn was transformed into a small residential building. The design was based on the guiding principle of developing a typology that emerges from the internal logic of the stable construction and is thus able to achieve an independence that architecturally legitimises living in a former stable that was intended for animals and hay. The former cowshed remains more or less untouched and functions as a flexible room, offering an intermediate climate as a physical buffer. Above, in the former hayloft, a central cross, made of steel beams, forms both a new basic spatial arrangement and a support for a simple intermediate floor, as we know it from the past. The resulting quadrants in the hayloft are supplemented by furniture; the minimal space is optimised by niches, cupboards and subtle details without disturbing the architectural transparency of the overall space and thus the full volume of the old hayloft. A ‚wooden tub’ rests on the steel cross, similar to a bird‘s nest, a sheltered retreat within the lively flat on its small footprint. Besides steel, the transformation is completely wooden, built with beams and planks. Their surfaces are whitewashed, in the character of the old stable.
