Courtyard House Renovation
Located in one of Varese’s historic neighborhoods, this farmhouse dates back to the 20th century and originally served a dual role as both a home and a workplace, connected to local silk-production practices. The project focuses on the transformation of the historic building, aiming to retain its key characteristics while updating it through a contemporary architectural language.
The interior spaces were reorganized to meet current living needs, keeping the original layout legible while improving continuity between rooms. Particular attention was given to the portico, understood as an intermediate threshold space: the round arches and stone masonry were preserved and enhanced, defining the entrance and the relationship with the outdoors. The ground floor accommodates the main living functions and benefits from generous natural light; the spatial sequence leads to the first floor, where the sleeping area and a large terrace are located.
The intervention retained several significant elements of the building, including the roof with its exposed timber structure, the stone walls, and the traditional terracotta flooring. These existing features were complemented by measured new insertions: light plastered surfaces, windows, and doors contribute to a more restrained atmosphere and improved comfort standards.
Overall, the renovation brings historic elements and new additions into dialogue, preserving the farmhouse’s identity while adapting it to contemporary use.
Through a balanced dialogue between old and new, the Courtyard House continued its life with renewed aspect.
