The project concerns the renovation of an apartment located in a 1940s building in Catania. It is based on the objective of enhancing the spatial and structural qualities of the existing building, drawing on the concepts of continuity and minimal intervention, while taking into account a limited budget.
The existing building features a number of significant architectural elements, including large openings to the exterior and generously proportioned vaulted ceilings, alongside the recurring theme of rounded edges found throughout the apartment in the door mouldings and at the corners of the load-bearing lava stone walls.
The new intervention, conceived as a clearly recognizable addition, is distinguished by a specific chromatic choice. It redefines the kitchen space and articulates the connection with the mezzanine level, establishing a system of relationships with the surrounding rooms and resolving the apartment’s circulation between the entrance level and the mezzanine.
In this way, the kitchen is transformed from an introverted, separate space into a place of interaction with the rest of the house. The connecting staircase is integrated into the kitchen design, while the original partition wall is transformed into a permeable element through the introduction of a glazed wooden frame and door. The chromatic choices of the new addition resonate with the finishes of historic residential architecture in the city of Catania.
