Maison du Parc de la Narbonnaise
A heritage site focused on ecotourism, integrated into the exceptional landscape of the Regional Nature Park, Narbonnaise in Mediterranean
The extension, built entirely of wood (walls, floors, siding), is sourced from sustainably managed forests in southern France (PEFC-certified).
The charred wood of the siding echoes the work of coopers, providing a durable finish for the building and its observation deck.
The large hall has regained its original grandeur: a space of great simplicity that reveals the roof structure, where only the damaged beams have been replaced.
Construction simplicity and the use of local resources are central to the project : the use of bio-based materials sourced from regional suppliers, a reduced carbon footprint, and energy optimization.
The new building holds the BEPOS Effinergie 2017 certification, and the renovated buildings meet the BBC Effinergie Rénovation -10% standard. The project holds the Bâtiment Durable Occitanie silver certification. It significantly limits soil sealing by reducing the built footprint, using permeable paving, and implementing sustainable stormwater management.
The project combines renovation and new construction within a framework of architectural continuity. The existing buildings are being restored while preserving their original structures: stone walls filled with lime mortar, and wooden or concrete floors, depending on the scope of the work. The roof has been the focus of a reuse initiative centered on canal tiles, which are sorted and reused to preserve the building’s heritage character. The new building is constructed entirely of wood (walls, floors, siding) sourced from southwestern France. The choice of charred wood siding provides natural, long-lasting protection for the material. It has helped to strengthen the industry and this expertise, which originated in the wine and shipbuilding sectors and is still present in Occitanie.
