Chromatic Chambers
Scenic living in a historic building
Renovation of an old apartment in Vienna. Clever room rearrangements and new connections created a circular floor plan. New Viewpoints and passageways link the rooms to form a scenic sequence of different atmospheres.
The design stages the apartment as a choreographed sequence of rooms with different atmospheres, connected by precise view axis and a consistent use of color.
The entrance hall forms the graphic prelude: white herringbone flooring creates a sense of calm, while the Fornasetti wallpaper with a cityscape motif adds depth and narrative. A custom-made mirrored glass cabinet combines storage, a coat rack, and closet space; its tinted, faceted fronts fragment the wallpaper pattern and add a tactile accent with red marble.
The bathroom serves as a connecting hub between the entrance hall and kitchen, creating a new connection that provides a shortcut within the apartment. As an indigo blue counterpoint to the pink kitchen, it intensifies the space with high-gloss tiles, herringbone flooring, and precise lighting.
The kitchen is designed as a bright, monochrome stage in pink. Minimalist surfaces and clean lines are accentuated by red details; lines of sight connect the kitchen with the deep blue bathroom and open it up further to the living area.
The study acts as an activating color space: a strong blue forms the basis, complemented by bright yellow and green accents and carefully placed objects.
In the salon, wraparound walnut paneling creates a warm shell of comfort. Coffered elements frame the oval table and provide a curated stage for porcelain figurines.
The living room concludes the sequence as a calm anchor in petrol blue: rich, textile, and atmospheric, in dialogue with the pink kitchen, which appears as a bright “field of light” in the line of sight. In this way, the old apartment can be experienced as a coherent narrative of color, material, and spatial depth.
