Wholesale Market Hamburg
The wholesale market is a landmark designed by Hermkes, Becker Schramm & Elingius in 1962
The wholesale market hall was built between 1958 and 1962. It went into operation on June 4, 1962. The 40,000-square-meter hall is a joint project by architects Bernhard Hermkes, Gerhart Becker, Schramm & Elingius, and engineers from Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG. The wave-shaped curved reinforced concrete shells were designed primarily by chief engineer Ulrich Finsterwalder. The hall, which is around 180 meters wide, consists of three parabolic, 21-meter-high reinforced concrete arches with a span of 48 meters. Between the three arches with positive curvature are two beams with negative curvature and a span of 16 meters and a clear height of 8.50 meters. Twelve rows of successive arches are arranged at intervals of 20 meters along the length, supporting shells or shell segments made of prestressed concrete. Large skylights are located on the north side. In 2017, the hall was designated a historic landmark of civil engineering in Germany by the Federal Chamber of Engineers.
