F. JACQUEMIN SCHOOL COMPLEX
Located at the edge of the village and opening onto the wide rural landscape of Ploegsteert, the extension of the Fernand Jacquemin school complex is part of the ongoing transformation of the site. “The project builds on their underlying structure to create a renewed educational facility, bringing together kindergarten and primary education while introducing a new kitchen and dining hub at the core of school life.
The extension clarifies the overall organization of circulation and clearly hierarchizes the surrounding spaces, giving priority to soft mobility. To the east, the building opens onto playgrounds animated by planted mounds and play areas. To the south and west, it faces the agricultural horizons, offering unobstructed views that support pedagogy and contribute to the well-being of the children. This relationship with the landscape structures the entire project: each classroom benefits from generous natural light and a landscaped setting, while the generously dimensioned circulation spaces naturally extend views towards the outside.
The material palette combines sobriety, robustness and durability in a balanced composition of concrete, brick and wood. Inside, materials prioritize comfort and use: natural linoleum flooring, acoustic wood-fiber ceilings, exposed concrete and built-in wooden furniture. The project implements healthy, durable and easy-to-maintain materials throughout.
Designed in close collaboration with the teaching staff and constructed on an occupied site, the extension offers a bright, calm and welcoming environment, conceived to support the children’s development and safety.
