Strasbourg Law Univeristy
The Strasbourg Law Univeristy, inaugurated in 1962 and designed by architect Roger Hummel, is an iconic building on the Esplanade campus, listed as a Historic Monument since 2005. Designed according to the open-plan principle, the building is notable for its highly flexible layout and its curved, colorful facades. Particular care was taken with the materials and furniture, especially in the staff room and the dean’s office. The second floor, formerly dedicated to the library, now houses the administrative offices of the Faculty of Law. The symmetrical layout has been preserved with offices aligned along the west facade and a corridor on the east side. The central hall, lit by skylights, houses the registrar’s office and provides a reception area for students. Historical research has made it possible to restore the original lighting principles with smooth ceilings and rows of radiant light fixtures. The staircases on the north and south gables have been extended to the garden level to meet current fire safety standards. These new flights, identical to the existing ones, retain the original aesthetic with curved concrete stringers, Burgundy stone cladding that follows the curves of the staircase, glass railings, and varnished oak handrails.
