Open Chapel
The Open Chapel is a project located in the small village of Hillershausen in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district of Germany. Completed between 2022 and 2024, the structure covers about 50 m² and serves as a contemporary communal space rather than a traditional chapel.
The project emerged from a bottom-up process, developed collaboratively with
local residents. This participatory approach places strong emphasis on community engagement, shared creativity, and collective identity. The Open Chapel thus reflects not only architectural intention but the spirit and values of the people who helped shape it.
The building consists of twelve sandstone columns, each six meters high, arranged elliptically. Together they form an interior space that subtly resembles two protective hands. The open configuration creates panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the dialogue between architecture, nature, and visitors.
The chapel embodies openness and inclusivity. It invites all people to pause, reflect, engage in conversation, or simply enjoy the natural setting. Elements such as integrated seating encourage exchange and community, while a roof structure with hanging plants merges the building with its environment. The wood-chip floor enhances the connection between indoor and outdoor.
In both form and atmosphere, the Open Chapel functions as a peaceful retreat and a lively meeting place, seamlessly merging the structure with its landscape and social interaction. It stands as a symbol of collaboration and a testament to how built spaces can enrich community life.
