The new Centro Direzionale station introduces a recognizable urban landmark within the 1970s artificial fabric designed by Kenzo Tange. The EMBT project links Naples’ volcanic ground to the Centro Direzionale masterplan, turning the surface into a complex topography with multiple pedestrian levels. The large undulating vaulted canopy in glued laminated timber (glulam) (≈10,000 m²) filters daylight and shadow like a “walk in the woods,” with timber columns socketed into the existing reinforced-concrete structures. The vaults, a nod to historic train stations, reshape public space and flows, connecting Line 1 to existing networks and integrating art and archaeology through a ceiling artwork inspired by a Pompeian face.
