The project finds its balance between preservation and renewal.
The early 20th-century gatehouse, standing at the entrance to the main villa, has been transformed into a home for a young couple who, with skill and dedication, actively took part in the renovation works.
The primary goal was to engage with the historical context, enhancing the original features while integrating them with the needs of contemporary living.
The building is arranged over two above-ground floors, a basement, and a spacious attic.
On the ground floor, the two partition walls in the right wing were removed, creating a generous open-plan living area.
The three carpets of hexagonal cement tiles were carefully restored and preserved, while the traces of the demolished walls were outlined with brass profiles. The rest of the flooring is a light-colored terrazzo, which brings coherence to the interiors and extends along the long corridor, the true distributive axis of the house.
The kitchen was kept in its original position, enhanced by a large island that serves as the convivial centerpiece of the space.
The bathroom was conceived as a sequence of glimpses and atmospheres that reveal themselves step by step.
The grand staircase has been preserved and leads to the sleeping area on the first floor.
From a technical standpoint, the renovation included the installation of a ceiling radiant heating system and the replacement of the existing windows, which were deteriorated and no longer met current energy standards.
New wooden frames with a regular design and single panes of glass were chosen, maximizing natural light, and strengthening the dialogue between interior and exterior.
The roof structure was completely replaced, while the original tiles were recovered, making the large attic fully usable. With its brightness and atmosphere, this space lends itself to multiple functions, first and foremost as an atelier. Distinctive elements such as fireplaces, thresholds, railings, and vaulted ceilings were preserved, in a careful balance between old and new that brings grace and elegance to the building.
