Lighthouse Pavilion at the Songshan Lake Biennale
Kuehn Malvezzi's new lighthouse pavilion is on display at the inaugural edition of the Songshan Lake Biennale in Dongguan, China. The translucent tower is built using glass bricks that are joined together like woven fabric to create a textile-like surface, creating a continuous movement between the inside and outside. Borrowing its form from ancient times, the brick remains a solid construction material that maintains its form and structural stability, yet it has migrated into glass as a new material with unexpected visual qualities. The pavilion acts and reacts in relation to light: during the day, sunlight produces kaleidoscopic reflections across the fragmented surfaces of the glass bricks, while at night the structure functions as a lantern, illuminating its surroundings.
