At the intersection of a bustling Ghent thoroughfare, a former fruit shop and
adjacent warehouse underwent a remarkable metamorphosis into a charming
residential enclave, complete with a communal terrace and inviting bistro.
Concealed behind a architypical gable in white brick, a compact yet surprisingly
expansive family house unfurls its allure: a soaring double-height living area,
adorned with large windows framing verdant vistas, seamlessly links the ground
and first floors via a graceful spiral staircase. The street-facing chamber doubles
as a versatile workspace or bedroom, while the upper level hosts two bedrooms,
separated by a centrally located bathroom.
A nod to the site’s historical lineage, an irregular terrace forms the focal point of the development, offering a serene sanctuary amidst the urban milieu. A bold façade accent in vibrant blue steel punctuates the street-facing exterior, delineating the new construction from its venerable neighbors.
Concealed behind this partially perforated steel barrier lies the entrance to the
bistro and an accompanying residence above. Ingeniously engineered double-
hinged doors facilitate seamless integration of the terrace with the bustling street
scene. Elevated clay clinkers on the façades imbue the outdoor space with a sense of visual serenity, complementing its diverse facades and finishes.
Meanwhile, the interior and exterior of the original fruit shop underwent a thoughtful revitalization, blossoming into a welcoming neighborhood eatery. Harnessing the inherent charm of the space, ceiling-high windows flood the dining
area with natural light by day, while casting a cozy glow upon the streetscape come evening. Subdued hues echo the gentle play of light, while a richly textured material palette creates an inviting ambiance.
At the heart of the room, the bar counter takes center stage, flanked by a sleek
steel cabinet that serves as a tantalizing glimpse into the kitchen beyond, ensuring guests are privy to the lively culinary spectacle unfolding at the center of it all.
