sports halls BZT
The new double-height sports facility, built using innovative timber construction, is defined by its efficient use of space and sustainable design that conserves land resources. For the first time in Switzerland, a timber–concrete composite ceiling has been applied in a sports hall, offering a lightweight alternative to conventional reinforced concrete.
A distinctive feature of the project is the use of regionally sourced «beetle wood» harvested from the public client’s own state forest. Nearly the entire building is made from this resource: of the total 603 m³ of wood used, 565 m³ comes directly from the local forest.
This approach not only ensures rapid natural regeneration—the volume of wood used grows back in Switzerland’s forests in about 30 minutes—but also shortens transport routes, reduces environmental impact, and strengthens the regional economy.
The primary and secondary timber structures are clearly expressed in the architecture. Externally, the rhythm of the structure is visible, while continuous ribbon windows give the building a striking horizontal character. Inside, spruce wood construction and panelling create a warm, natural atmosphere with a pleasant indoor climate.
Designed with a long-term perspective, the building system allows for the separate dismantling of components, enabling future reuse. Together, these measures make the project a benchmark in resource-efficient, sustainable construction.
