Salle polyvalente Jean Moulin
Located in Marseille within the premises of Collège Jean Moulin, the hall aims to provide a space for sports practice for middle school students and also open it to associations in an area with few public facilities for residents.
The existing buildings, with little architectural interest, generated a fragmented internal operation. These built entities, sometimes isolated, needed to be unified around a structuring axis.
To shape this design, an internal connection is extended throughout the entire site. This route eventually opens up to the new multipurpose hall.
As a true covered square, it asserts its institutional image while creating a sense of proximity.
Built on stilts, the building accommodates the teachers' parking on the lower level, and the multipurpose hall is at ground level with the college.
The building stands permeable and lightweight. Transparency and openness to the outside enhance its image as a place of exchange and encounter. Teachers, students, associations, and parents share it. Differentiated accesses allow for extracurricular and secure use.
Symmetrical and oriented, the building is treated with the same care on all its facades. The inertia of the concrete structure evokes the architecture of the ancient Mediterranean countries. The gaps in this protective envelope provide a kinetic view of the activities taking place within.
Exposed to the east and west, the two large glazed surfaces of approximately 30 square meters each are protected by a broad covered gallery that doubles the facade.
The exterior gallery functions as a peristyle that shelters against heavy rains and intense sunlight. This transitional space reduces the contrast between the brightness outside and the subdued interior light.
The building's structure is highlighted by the use of precast concrete coated with a light stain, while the infill is made of hand-molded natural bricks.
The existing topography is largely preserved. Only a few trees will be removed to make way for the future multipurpose hall.
