École primaire Stadacona
The first project completed by Lab-École, this neighborhood public school comprises 20 classrooms and accommodates 400 students, from pre kindergarten (age 4) through grade six. Conceived as an urban, terraced school full of life, it has become a vibrant presence and a new landmark in the Limoilou landscape.
The project is articulated through three distinct volumes, each defined by its materiality: the community hub, the learning street, and the learning community. A brick base anchors the building in the architectural identity of Limoilou, while the arcade expressed in the masonry recalls the scale of the district’s characteristic duplexes. Resting on this foundation, the upper volume is clad in a light, green-toned finish, evoking both the mature trees of the neighborhood and the roofline of the adjacent church.
The terraced configuration transforms rooftops into extensions of the schoolyard, unlocking their full potential as play and gathering spaces. This verticality also offers students sweeping views of the city and surrounding mountains. At ground level, a generous entrance hall serves as a welcoming threshold, opening the school to its community and reinforcing the strong social and cultural fabric unique to Limoilou.
