Walferdange Residences
Inspired by the distinctive roofscape of Helmsange, Walferdange, this new residential ensemble of 14 units reinterprets the contrasting silhouettes that define the local streetscape. Rather than replicate the past, we observed the way neighbouring buildings form shifting rooflines—each with its own rhythm—and translated these formal gestures into a contemporary sequence of staggered volumes. Each volume responds directly to its context and adjacent structure, resulting in a fluid architectural skyline that captures light, shadow, and the spirit of the village.
The movement of the architecture emerges from the gestures of the human body. For us, a residence is not a static object, but a space shaped by motion, interaction, and rhythm. The façades reflect this thinking: shifting profiles and dynamic lines introduce a spatial tempo that varies across orientations. Towards the street, the design contributes a highly rhythmic “fifth façade” that redefines the street edge—layering contemporary expression over Walferdange’s historical fabric.
At the rear, this rhythm gives way to informality. A shared garden invites residents to engage directly with their environment—planting wildflowers, growing vegetables, or carving out quiet moments in personal green corners. These simple, everyday rituals foster agency, connection, and well-being, turning the back garden into a communal landscape for living.
Inside, the light-filled homes are arranged along a sunlit central spine. This spatial axis links private retreats with terraces and outdoor spaces—supporting a balanced lifestyle that values both intimacy and community. The interiors flow naturally, echoing the
project's architectural language of movement, openness, and gentle transitions. This project is not about mimicry—it is about engagement. It respects the surrounding forms while quietly evolving them. It invites conversation with its place, its history, and the people who will inhabit it.
