Karkooi Zoudtland
As early as 1785, a farmhouse stood opposite the main house and the Flemish barn on the Zoudtland estate in Breda. This farmhouse was demolished in the 1960s. To restore the original historic ensemble of three buildings to its present state, ‘the karkooi’ was built on the exact site where this farmhouse once stood.
The typology of the "karkooi" (barn for farmers carts en implements) is inspired by the archetype of the former farmhouse. The shape has been given a slight twist within the original building envelope by rotating the volume at an angle without altering the roof direction. The "karkooi" has a parking area (drive in) for wagons with gates on both sides and a storage area. Daylight enters through the gaps between the planks of the facade and the roof. The cart cage is constructed entirely of thermally preserved and untreated poplar wood. These poplars stood in the estate's meadows and were felled as part of the restoration of the cultural-historical coulisse landscape characteristic of the estate. By using this wood, which originates from the estate, the immediate surroundings are used in a traditional and sustainable manner.
