High school extension
The extension project of the Lycée La Côtière is shaped by the exceptional natural setting in which it is located. The design prioritizes respecting the topography and preserving the quality of the wooded areas.
The building follows the natural contours of the land, with green roofs that blend into the surrounding hills. It is carefully placed to avoid any geological risks and is limited to two floors to maintain views of the existing tall trees.
The main entrance to the extension connects directly to the existing school’s main hall via a footbridge, due to the sloping terrain. This elevated entrance overlooks a high courtyard with views of the sports fields and distant landscape. A secondary, technical access is available at ground level near the sports facilities.
Pedestrian access from the existing parking lot continues through the current school hall. The building's simple, elongated design enhances the natural terrain, with concrete and light wood materials helping it blend into the environment. A central interior corridor serves as a continuation of the communal spaces of the existing building.
Classrooms open up to the outdoors and benefit from quality northern light, while solar protection is provided by adjustable aluminium louvers. Landscaping has replaced the originally planned building footprint, expanding the recreational courtyard and integrating stormwater management features.
The vegetated roofs help the building blend into the landscape and improve its thermal inertia. Light grey concrete is used in the upper courtyard. The nearby public parking, managed by the local community, remains the primary access point for students and buses.
