ENFILADE HOUSE
Enfilade House, by Paolo Catrambone and Maria Ave Romani, is a renovation within Bologna’s Colonna-Gnudi Palace for a couple of young actors. The project restores spatial coherence by revealing a historic enfilade, original wooden beams, and Seminato floors, blending conservation strict regulations with contemporary design in a respectful revival of the palace’s character and atmosphere.
Enfilade house is an extended renovation project, located in the Colonna-Gnudi Palace in Bologna.
The project seeks to restore harmony between the original historic elements and intrusive modifications from past century renovations. The design of the house emphasizes a balance between conservation and contemporary enhancement, reintroducing spatial coherence through selective demolitions and careful restoration.
Key interventions include the removal of non-original partitions to reveal a previously existing and historical enfilade, visually connecting the street façade with the internal garden, a feature characteristic of grand Italian palaces.
All the recent suspended ceilings have been eliminated to expose and restore the original wooden beams, reinforcing structural integrity while enhancing historical authenticity.
Existing Bolognese Seminato floors have been fully uncovered from recent superpositions and restored. The new floor materials have been chosen to ensure material continuity, mixing concrete floor with local reddish sand and stones.
The restoration extends to windows and doors, preserving their historical character while improving performance, ensuring a respectful and modern architectural renewal.
