CASA S+M
The building was constructed in 1968 by the architect Piercarlo Stefanelli with the intention of elevating a commercial activity, and it has always exhibited the characteristics of an urban villa. The building was inserted into a context characterised by a strong urban presence, and it immediately represented a rupture with its surroundings.
The renovation work took into account the marked architectural qualities and had a twofold objective: on the one hand to preserve the aesthetic characterization that has marked this city street for years, and on the other hand to update some elements to meet contemporary needs and solve existing critical issues.
For the reasons outlined above, it was decided that the main façade should be kept as faithful to the original design as possible. This involved enhancing the large windows, redesigning their mouldings and preserving the original projections. The most incisive interventions were focused on the east and north fronts, where the renovation work concentrated on modifying and enlarging the existing openings as well as the building's interior.
With the commercial activity located on the ground floor, the residence is developed on the upper two levels, the warehouse's roof is usedas a large outdoor terrace. A new large opening connects the living area to the north terrace, while a new staircase, with an exposed concrete core, connects the different levels of the residence.
The interiors defined by expansivewindows that flood the spaces with light and offer open views of the surroundings. Few and carefully selected materials have been used for the finishes. Exposed reinforced concrete has been used for the staircase body, oak for floors and some coverings, and black lacquer for some parts of the furnishings.
