Students Residence and Winery, Santa Maria do Mar Monastery
The Santa Maria do Mar monastery constitutes only a small part of the complex designed in the late 1950s by Nuno Teotónio Pereira’s studio. The intervention aimed to restore the pre-existing building and adapt it to a student residence, as well as to creation a new wine cellar and wine production and tasting areas that will support the development of the property's vineyard.
Considering the heritage importance and specific qualities of the original building, it was decided to completely restore it, preserving its spatial layout, with the exception of small adjustments to all rooms and sanitary facilities. Its reasonable state of conservation and the fact that the old and new programs were, in essence, similar, contributed to this decision.
The cellar and wine reception and tasting spaces are an entirely new addition. The new body is strategically implemented, favoring the use of the set and rebuilding the entry process which, until now and due to the incompleteness of the original monastic complex, was not clear. The new building is designed in resonance with the original set and placed immediately after the entrance, thus formalizing, more clearly, the access courtyard.
