ESMA
Eco-campus including a student residence and the higher education schools dedicated to artistic professions.
Located in the heart of the Euratlantique business and innovation district, near Bordeaux train station, and linked to the new Arse urban park, the new building, delivered in the summer of 2023, hosts Artemisia, a student residence with 307 accommodations, and two higher education schools: the École Supérieure des Métiers Artistiques (ESMA), specialized in cinema, special effects and the CinéCréatif school, specialized in video games.
The architects are proposing a frugal and reversible building, saving materials is at the heart of the architectural and technical design of the project: “We wanted to simplify the architecture to its limit while opening it to the city, the architecture is designed as a structure for life – economical and lively.”
The building, with a surface area of 14,000 m², adopts a strong and clear bias: the schools – completely glazed on 3 floors – are topped by an imposing five-story mineral block housing the student accommodation. The intermediate floor between the glass base of the school and the mineral block of housing accommodates a breathing forest as well as convivial spaces. The building is designed as a bioclimatic project. Thus, the plant belt of tall trees which will take place around the base of the project will provide shade and protection in summer, while in winter the sun’s rays will be able to heat the building naturally and without hindrance. The greening of the deck will respond to that of the belt by providing refreshment within the building. The frugality of the materials and systems used as well as the reversibility of their implementation constitute the radically contemporary challenge of the project, that of the invention of the buildings and cities of tomorrow.
