private apartment
Located in a 1970s building in the Buttes-Chaumont district of Paris, this former through-plan commercial space sits at ground level and opens onto a garden.
The project aimed to transform the space into a re- sidence that embodies the qualities of a standalone house while being part of a collective building.
First, the existing street-facing entrance—lacking in pri- vacy—was reimagined. The new entrance sequence now provides a direct connection to the garden.
Three key characteristics guided the spatial organiza- tion: the east-west orientation, the dual relationship with both the street and the garden, and the existing reinforced concrete structure of the building.
The floor plan follows this orientation, allowing the living space to «follow the sun» throughout the day, evolving in ambiance as natural light shifts.
The existing reinforced concrete structure shapes the apartment and creates distinct sequences. As the star- ting point for materiality, the raw concrete contrasts with the warmth of oak and the refinement of stainless steel featured in the kitchen. The painted oak flooring was deliberately kept neutral and light, serving as a back- drop for the furniture.
Framed views are carefully designed to reveal perspec- tives, add depth, create visual compositions, or offer moments of escape. These framing elements establish transversal relationships between the reception area and the service spaces.
