International Guesthouse Regensburg
Conversion of a former barracks into a guest and meeting house for the Regensburg universities.
As part of the conversion of the former Nibelungen barracks in the south of Regensburg, the former guard and officer building, built in the ‚Heimatschutz‘ style from 1939-1941 and now a listed building as a testament to the era, was to be converted into a guest and meeting house for the Regensburg universities. In the former anti-aircraft barracks of the Luftwaffe, it was a challenge in many ways to make the "international, cosmopolitan spirit of the University of Regensburg come alive" as desired by the client.
After extensive remediation of pollutants, the office rooms, the previously unused attic and the basement were converted into apartments for students and teachers. The former cell block of the barracks now serves as emergency accommodation and offers students short-term shelter. While most of the interventions are careful and hardly visible from the outside, the wide-projecting roof forms the new, widely visible address. The former flag parade ground was transformed into a spacious, terraced garden and the dark officers' hall became a light-filled meeting place for all guests.
