EXTENSION AND RENOVATION OF A HOUSE
The commission consisted of the refurbishment and extension of an existing house in Valdemorillo next to the Valmayor reservoir, situated on a wooded and particularly quiet plot.
It seemed to us that the existing house had an unfavourable orientation with regard to the sun and lacked a defined vocation, like an object without any clue as to its access or relationship with the exterior.
The new dwelling is intended for a couple and their dogs, and involves the reorganisation of the interior space of the existing dwelling and the creation of two new structures: a new closed body as a reception hall and a pergola open to the plot. This is a couple with a strong link to nature and these elements seek to favour the connection of the dwelling with the exterior and to enhance the use of the spaces on the plot.
The new entrance body with a sloping roof is integrated into the existing construction and is connected to it through a gap in its enclosure that is now used as a passage to the interior. In this small volume of great height a vestibule is organised, together with a workroom and a toilet, forming a warm welcoming space through the materials used.
By placing these new functions outside the original dwelling, we have more space to reorganise the interior living space. We opted for a large open room in which the living area is located together with the dining and kitchen space, adjoining the bedrooms and the work office.
The new pergola under an irregular, terraced concrete base that connects the level of the house with that of the exterior, has different widths and heights and extends along the south face of the original house, establishing a connection with the plot in the best possible solar orientation.
Its formal structure is in harmony with that of the nearby trees and uses permeable materials for its roof, thus favouring the entry of light and ventilation and the use of the exterior on cold winter days.
Polycarbonate and steel cables are used for its covering to support the climbing vegetation that will change its image with the seasons.
This new ensemble formed by the house, pavilion and pergola is connected by a new paving with the access to the plot from the street. The layout diverts the path of vehicles away from the natural views from the living spaces.
The result is a spacious home tailored to the client's needs, enhancing their relationship with nature in a privileged environment.
