The starting point for the design was the unused attic space of a 1940s apartment building in central Cologne.
The existing roof was removed to raise the ridge to match the height of the surrounding buildings, maximising the permissible building volume. This alteration allows for an additional level, enabling the development of a two-storey family apartment spanning 120 m2.
The individual shapes of the rooms are based on a three-dimensional grid derived from the existing structure. A generous liv- ing area along the north-facing façade extends all the way to the roof. A central two-storey volume houses service spaces on the lower level and two bedrooms on the upper level. An additional bedroom and a roof terrace are located on the south-fac- ing side, overlooking a courtyard.
A monochromatic colour palette enhances the abstract quality of the spatial volumes.
