RE-ACT
Boa Mistura's latest project explores the tension between individual actions and their effects on public space.
The artist collective Boa Mistura, together with PONCE+ROBLES gallery, partnered with DORCAM (Doral Contemporary Art Museum) to carry out the RE-ACT project during Miami Art Week last December.
Continuing the line of investigation opened with the RE-VS project in the last edition of the ARCO2023 fair, Boa Mistura once again uses the gallery's exhibition framework to explore the tension between the private and public spheres.
RE-ACT is based on a work presented in two formats that interact with each other; a large-scale mural, located outside the Laundromat Art Space gallery and a mirrored artwork, composed of 30 original paintings for sale.
The mural faces from the execution to its imminent erasure 48 hours after its completion.
The permanence of the work in the public space depends on the individual action of collectors, who through the acquisition of the original paintings, “save” the fragments corresponding to the mural.
On December 7, the mural began to be systematically erased in a three-hour performance, broadcast on streaming.
21 of the 30 fragments were saved from disappearing.
The final result of the mural is a representation of the collective reaction to individual decisions.
“This project makes you think about what effects our own individual actions have on the public space,” says Pablo, a member of Boa Mistura. Reflecting on the transient nature of their work, Pablo adds, “Our work is ephemeral by nature because it’s in the public space. They’ll eventually remove it completely and place advertising instead. This is the harsh reality we have to face all the time.”
