Entrez dans la Pierre. Un récit d’architectures varoises
The project « Entrez dans la Pierre… Un récit d’architectures varoises » was promoted by the CAUE VAR with the collaboration of the “Conseil Départemental du Var, de la Ville de Toulon, et de la Rue des Arts” and curated by Véronique Hours and Fabien Mauduit, commissioners of the exhibition
Part of this project is the photographic story created by Aldo Amoretti with a journey through the architecture of the Var and accompanied by the words of the architect Fernand Pouillon.
An extract from the travel diary:
“They gave me a map of places to get to know, an itinerary along 14 architectures to discover and photograph.
By following this map, which starts from the Esterel Sea and crosses the entire Var from south to north, from east to west, I was able to discover the different characters of this region and represent them.
The architectures are linked by the red thread of stone, material and construction tradition of this region.
I remember the great massive and curved walls of the VIA FERRATA DELLA CORNICHE D’OR, a masterwork of the engineers des Ponts et Chaussé
The silent and cool places of the AQUEDUC DE MONS À FRÉJUS;
The monolithic construction where you can feel all the power of the stone MÉGALITHE DU DOMAINE DE LA PIERRE DE LA FÉE;
The mountains with a completely different landscape and works such as the CHÂTEAU DE TRIGANCE, LE APIER A’ CARCES and LES BOIRES A’ GINASSERVIS where the stones are collected and stacked intelligently to build these shelters.
And then down, back to civilization, to see the incredible texture of the stone in the BASILIQUE SAINTE MARIE MADELEINE, a masterpiece of the art of building.
And then the coast, with the wise intervention of POUILLON A’ LA SEYNE-SUR-MER that survives with strength the tourist frenzy, the elegant CONSERVATOIRE DU PRADET and the VILLAGE DES FOURCHES - GAOU BÉNAT perfectly camouflaged with the Mediterranean scrub.
Or the visionary work of the SCÈNE NATIONALE of CHÂTEAUVALLON.
During the trip I stopped for a few days at the abbey of Le Thoronet, where all this is condensed, where the history and culture of these places remain forever carved in stone.
In this kaleidoscope of colors, sounds and atmospheres the stone guided me as it has accompanied us since the beginning of our civilization.
It was a beautiful trip, where I was able to see the variety of culture and landscape of this region indelibly imprinted in the stone with which it was built.”
