In this project, we were tasked with the reorganisation of the existing layout without altering its foundational architecture. Our intervention began with the removal of all unnecessary elements and barriers that previously compartmentalised the space. The kitchen, once hidden behind an enclosing wall and confined to a mere six square meters, was relocated to a prominent position at the garden side adjacent to the sliding doors, capitalising on the existing skylights which flood this area with light. The kitchen island, a truncated circle, serves as both a pivot for movement and a communal hub. A single, elongated wall unit stretches across the room, melding storage with kitchen functionality. Its wood-textured fronts add a touch of warmth, grounding the space amid its newfound openness.
Directly opposite, a built-in bench was installed to conserve space. This bench integrates seamlessly with the TV cabinet that skillfully wraps around an existing column. A semi-circular red plexiglass lighting fixture sits atop the TV unit, evoking an image of a setting sun and bathing the darkest, most intimate space at the back in a warm glow. A second fixed seating unit and bookcase further complete the TV area.
Material choices were critical. We selected light colours and reflective surfaces to further bounce the natural light throughout the room.
