The "Halo" project in Vigo, Spain, is a major urban infrastructure designed by AM2 Arquitectos, NOARQ, and Arenas y Asociados. It was part of the city's "Vigo Vertical" strategy aimed at addressing the challenges posed by the city's rugged terrain.
The centrepiece of the project is a lift tower paired with a massive, circular pedestrian bridge connecting two key areas.Halo was conceived to address the city's challenging topography by improving pedestrian mobility while simultaneously becoming a landmark for Vigo.
This iconic urban element seamlessly links the city’s higher and lower areas, providing a transportation solution that emphasizes both functionality and aesthetics.The structure consists of a circular pedestrian bridge, with a diameter of approximately 80–90 meters, and a tower that houses two lifts, connecting the Vigo intermodal station with the lower part of the city.
This vertical connection overcomes a 40-meter difference in elevation, providing a seamless link between key areas like García Barbón Avenue and the intermodal hub. The exterior surfaces of the pedestrian bridge and tower are primarily covered in white lacquered steel plates, giving the Halo its distinctive sleek, modern appearance. These plates not only serve an aesthetic purpose but also act as a protective layer for the underlying structure, ensuring durability against weather and environmental wear.
The glass-covered tower and bridge not only improve accessibility but also act as an iconic beacon. The design plays with transparency, reflecting light during the day and glowing softly at night. The dual walkways—one open for panoramic views and the other more enclosed—allow for both practical use and a tourist-friendly experience.
In keeping with sustainable design, the project includes vertical wind turbines integrated into the structure, which generate power for the elevator system. These turbines are not just functional, but also serve as architectural elements, supporting the structure and further emphasizing its design.
The Halo, in particular, stands out for its innovative design, connecting diverse parts of the city while offering panoramic views and enhances the movement of people in the coastal city, combining modern technology with artistic vision to create a harmonious urban landscape.
