I was a guest of the Benedictine friars in the Saint Benedict Abbey of Hans van der Laan.
Days spent sleeping in a cell and eating with them in the refectory.
The space is perfectly proportioned and reflects the metrics of Benedictine life where everything is ordered in a harmonious flow.
I had the privilege of visiting the archive where the original drawings of the abbot Van der Laan are kept, precious pencil and ink lines that punctuate according to the harmony of the Plastic Number.
Observing these drawings I discovered that together with the expansion of the cemetery there was also a space designed for the cemetery. A secluded, calm and silent place, connected by a long straight road lined with trees.
So early in the morning I went out and went to look for the cemetery.
There geometry is like a musical score that regulates everything. Standing there listening to these spaces that resonate with nature and memory was a unique experience.
Another completely different way of synchronizing with places, of seeing the world around us with completely new lenses.
