CASAMONTESA
CASAMONTESA is a house located in the western mountains of Madrid close to the San Juan reservoir, an old bungalow that was part of a hotel complex from the seventies. The original construction had a hybrid character between highland and modern with a kitsch touch that has nevertheless stood the test of time, maintaining a singular identity that we wanted to conserve.
The owners, a young urban couple who love design and live and work in the centre of Madrid, were looking for a functional and compact refuge within a fantastic garden, in a privileged natural environment close to the city, as a getaway.
The studio saw this house as an opportunity to articulate the space with a global approach that responded to the architecture, interior design and furniture project.
The strategy has been to work on the facade openings to achieve a better relation between the interior and exterior while gaining spaciousness. The windows are now deep boxes that frame the exterior view. We generated thresholds that become the distinctive element along with the kitchen island: a large piece of furniture for cooking, eating and working that articulates the interior of the house.
To connect the two operations, both the window openings and the large table have been lined with small handmade burgundy tiles.
The rest of the surfaces - campaspero stone floors and waxed tinted plaster walls - establish a dialogue by contrast with the colourful and shiny surface of the tiles.
