East 72nd Street Apartment
An open, sun washed and efficient living space, together with a bright yet minimal material palette, guarantee spatial continuity in this Upper East Side pre-war apartment.
The soft white walls, together with the oak wood used for doors & built-in cabinetry, create a warming flow, generating a common thread that ties the different spaces together throughout the apartment.
The Oak Thread Apartment
Our design for this Upper East Side apartment focused on creating an open and efficient living space, enhancing spatial continuity within the historic pre-war layout through a bright yet minimal material palette.
By reconfiguring the existing floor plan, we connected the kitchen and dining area to the living room, which overlooks Madison Avenue with partial views of Central Park. A former maid’s room at the rear was expanded into a third bedroom with an en-suite bath, improving both functionality and flow.
The apartment’s design is unified by soft white walls and oak wood elements, prominently featured in the built-in cabinetry and doors, creating a warm, cohesive aesthetic. Throughout the space, a herringbone white oak floor adds timeless elegance and enhances natural light. A white oak low bookcase seamlessly links the living and dining areas, transitioning into minimalist kitchen cabinetry, which frames a striking Calacatta marble island.
In the private quarters, bedrooms and bathrooms were redesigned to maximize efficiency while harmonizing color and texture, ensuring a serene and sophisticated living environment. Several of the built-in furniture pieces were custom-designed by us, further enhancing the space's functionality and aesthetic cohesion.
