MCM Apartment refurbishment
The renovation of an apartment in a1930s palazzo turned a conventional layout of two bedrooms, a kitchen and a small living room connected by a long corridor into one large common space for cooking and living. Additional rooms used as a study and bedroom make for a compact floor plan in which generous and flexible social spaces are prioritised within a limited floor area.
The rectangular plan with a single frontage runs along the main façade and has five vertical windows that bring light into each of the spaces.
The beautiful shades of the facades and the daily life of the residents on the balconies on the other side of the street are part of the setting of the house, acting as background framed by the restored timber windows.
The project seeks to bring back some of the qualities of the original apartment. The traditional “mattonelle” tiles present in the common areas of the palazzo have been installed in the living room. The ceiling mouldings have been restored, while new elements, such as the kitchen units, have been made of stainless steel to create a tension between the existing and the new.
The generous ceiling height and the variable light through the day in the living room give flexibility to the space and allow for different uses and layouts.
