Visitor center De Wissen
Along the banks of the old arm of the Meuse, a new reception building for the Negenoord nature reserve is designed by GAFPA. In an elongated tower volume, an information point and an exhibition space are stacked on top of each other, encased between two massive concrete cores. Slender TT floors span a free field of ten meters from core to core, leaving the front and rear facades transparent.
A light steel skeleton is built around the concrete building, leaning forward toward the water and wrapped with a cable mesh. Between the building and the second skin, two exterior staircases will be inserted at the heads, winding up from the dike to a public vantage point on the roof.
Over time, the steel structure will overgrow with climbing plants, the building blending into the landscape.
