McKinnon
McKinnon is comprised of forty-one apartments spread over five levels that embody thorough and considered design.
Featuring off form concrete, fluted precast concrete walls, steel-battened balustrades and concrete soffits, these apartments exemplify the practice’s reductionist approach to architecture.
With granite paving across the ground plane, combined with a central courtyard that pierces each of the five levels, there’s a subtle blurring between the indoors and out. Designed to accentuate the spaces, the two and three-bedroom apartments feature high ceilings and generous glazing, maximising access to natural light. There’s also a sense of generosity with the treatment of the ground plane, with a café framed by built-in concrete seating adjacent to the street pavement designed for locals strolling past.
RITZ&GHOUGASSIAN was also tasked to design the tenancy at the base of the building. The eatery is panelled with fibreglass, establishing a consistent rhythm throughout the space allowing one to view beyond its surface and amplify the perception of depth and volume. Playful shadows beyond the warm, amber glow of the fibreglass panels reflect energy and movement from the back of house, colouring the generous horizontal volume and creating a space of refuge that envelopes the patrons within”.
