VILLA BLOOMGARDEN BERLIN
In the beginning were the lush, densely overgrown garden and the estate house with mansard roof. Three different decades of planning law determine the ensemble: the existing detached house on the 1930s plot, to the left of it the perimeter block development of the 1970s and to the right the contemporary terraced houses with a distance to the neighbour. This circumstance made it possible to retain the detached house towards the street after demolishing a wintergarden and to connect it to the wall with the new building towards the garden. This creates an entrance courtyard that also functions as a kitchen garden.
If one enters the raised ground floor of the existing building from there, a staircase leads from the foyer with a floor of polished asphalt down to the high living area on the garden side. The kitchen and fireplace open up this living area lengthwise, while the sliding windows, which can be moved along the entire length, open up the room to the garden. The transversely positioned kitchen with cooking island again spans the space between the front garden and the garden. The seemingly randomly distributed special lights in the concrete ceiling, the extra-wide floorboards, the sculptural fireplace with bench and the generosity towards the garden underline the special atmosphere of the room. On the upper floor, the master bedroom, master bathroom with sauna and studio each have their own hipped roofs to give the rooms the necessary height and independence. A skylight in the bedroom lets you gaze at the stars at night or hear the rain pattering down. A circular, central room with a skylight opens up all the rooms in the extension and connects them with the children's rooms in the old building, which are also extended via galleries in the attic. The way into and through the house is a differentiated composition of various spatial events.
The different colours and materials of the façade were whitewashed over, existing repairs in the roughcast were deliberately left recognisable. The new building continues the texture with a white-painted, graphic-looking battening and likewise white-washed brick slips. The signal yellow parapets, the deep blue windows and the red-and-white striped awning give the house in the green a summery cheerfulness that is captured by the precisely composed structure of the façade.
