CUENCO. Pabellón Eco 2023
Cuenco is an environmental observatory, an open device exposed to the meteorological flow of Mexico City and the specific atmosphere of El Eco museum courtyard. Each arranged element conveys and articulates El Eco's natural rhythm. The machine enters into cadence with it: the play of opposites, the cotton and its wear, cause-and-effect of rainwater and sun in their periodic dance of evaporation and precipitation; the fabric saturates, drips, and restarts its vertical journey. At the precise moment when the point of resistance of the counterweights is overcome and they are released from the vertical attraction, the plate yields to its embrace, the space contracts, and a circular boundary is drawn in the courtyard. As the atmosphere of the courtyard suspends again, it expands, the courtyard eclipsed through the shadow while the counterweights lose the eternal battle lost against gravity.
The courtyard is dressed in a perceptible and kinetic temporal sense through the construction of a floating shadow that proposes indeterminacy as a temporal and spatial experience. Cuenco struggles in search of the balance between the Earth that attracts it in response to its mass and the tension that supports it levitative, falsely inert. This balance is subject to biological and atmospheric variations, the weights arranged, and the sum of their opposing forces: a cluster of extrinsic and intrinsic circumstances intertwined in a network of interdependent events that find their focus in the textile.
This threshold of the event is a model of synchrony, an interval that is drawn during the course of the days while it moves through space through its indissoluble parts united by their simultaneous movements. The predictive is composed of the separation, transit, and reincorporation of the machine, the courtyard as an experimental flask, a mutation that inhabits the realm of possibility.
