Aperture House
An additional structure to the rear of an existing residence, Aperture House contains a two-car garage with studio apartment above for my clients, a Cinematographer and film Director. The namesake window represents an aspect ratio of 1.66:1, utilized in European arthouse films and employed by such cinema legends as Elia Kazan, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and Derek Cianfrance. The form of the addition is a direct extrusion of the simple gable of the existing residence, separated by a wood terrace. The Aperture, along with dormers comprised of corner windows of various heights depending on program beyond, capture natural light during the day and present as lanterns during the evening. These architectural elements interrupt the pure gable form to create occupiable space amidst the expressive framing of the secondary structure. Local limestone surrounds the aperture and completes the corners of the dormers.
